Refurbishing a Thrift Store China Hutch

It didn’t take anytime at all to turn this crazy awesome find into a piece of furniture I’m absolutely in love with! 



Nate and I have been on the look for a nice big hutch to replace the buffet we currently have in the dining room.  When we came along this $75 piece at Good Samaritan we knew it fit the bill!  You can’t see them here, but the back had broken mirrors in the back.  Once they were removed Nate got busy sanding and prepping the piece for paint.



You can’t really see it but my lovely husband is still learning the fine art of sanding.  You can’t really tell here, but yes, he managed to sand out a large majority of the beveling.  God bless him, at least he tried.



There is so much great space for our homeschooling supplies, even if the shelves are a bit bowed.



And the painting begins.



Exactly how many layers are we going to have to use to get this piece where we want it?



Two layers of primer, two layers of paint, and a little sanding did the trick.
 


This is exactly where I want the hutch to go, but alas, we have floor issues that are throwing everything off.  Plus…I’m really worried that once the top goes on it’s going to be too much for the space.  Let me rephrase that, we’re still showing the house and hoping to sell.  Not everyone can see past the furniture and I don’t want it to overwhelm.



I love it, even without the shelves in it! But…Mmm, yeah. I think it may overwhelm.
Ugh, and that darn floor!  If we planned on staying here we’d have new bamboo by now, but there’s no reason to put in a floor that a potential new owner may not want.

So, we took the top off and stored it back in the garage.  Thankfully, I was able to get all the homeschooling and art supplies in the bottom of the hutch!  Plus I was able to use the top to display photos. 



When Nate went to put the cabinet doors back on they just didn’t work, the wood in the middle couldn’t hold them.  Eventually I’ll be making matching curtains, hung with tension rods to close it up.

This is reason #486 why I can’t wait until we get a bigger house!

And here is where I complain about my husband’s painting habits.  I wish he would leave it to me instead of leaving open cans of paint with used brushes OUTSIDE FOR OVER 30 MINUTES.
