Kids Craft: Egg Carton Dragons
Dragons can be found in myths, stories, and fables from nearly every culture around the world, past, and present. Is it any wonder? No other creature more inspires our imaginations to consider a world of magic. Is it obvious we've been on a dragon kick these past couple weeks?
It all started when we read Herb, the Vegetarian Dragon, from there things took a decidedly reptilian turn, and the next thing I knew we were making dragon poppets and hitting up the recycling bin for this egg carton dragon kids craft.
Here's how to make a fire-breathing beast of your own!
Recycling Bin Dragons
Supplies
- Egg carton cut in half lengthwise
- empty paper towel roll
- paint
- buttons sequins and gems
- pipe cleaners
- googly eyes
- yellow crepe/tissue paper
- glue and scissors
Step 1: Use bright coordinating colors to paint your paper towel roll and egg carton.
Step 2: Glue the two pieces together. Rubber bands help to hold them in place until the glue dries.
Step 3: While the glue from step 2 dries, go ahead and place your eyes and buttons (nostrils).
Step 4: Use scissors to poke a hole in the top of the egg carton. Then create a ridged backbone by cutting, bending, and inserting in bits of pipe cleaner.
Step 5: Dragons like sparkle and shine! Sequin and rhinestone up your creature.
This is the most fun part of the project, encourage kids to flex their imaginations in decorating their mythical beasts.
Step 6: Let everything dry before cutting off the rubber bands.
Step 7: Cut strips of yellow crepe paper and glue it to the inside of the dragon's mouth to give him fiery breath.
Have you pinned this post yet? You should!
When dragon fever hits your house, this can be your go-to fun project for the entire family!
Once your dragons are done, you could hang them from a string or use dowels to create stick puppets.
They are perfect for promoting imaginative play!
